Situated in the rolling landscapes of Assam, the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at NIT Silchar offers a rich intellectual environment for exploring the many dimensions of human experience. Since its inception in 1967, the department has been devoted to academic inquiry, committed to understanding the intricacies of human thought, culture, economy, and society. Immersed in the cultural richness of Northeast India, the department integrates the domains of humanities and social sciences to create intense, contemplative inquiry into the world.

Welcome to the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) at the National Institute of Technology Silchar! As a vibrant and multidisciplinary academic unit, the department is dedicated to enriching the intellectual and professional development of students across disciplines. Our faculty members bring expertise in Economics, English, and Cultural Studies, contributing to both foundational learning and advanced research. The department’s research spans a wide range of contemporary areas—Development Economics, Environmental Economics, Gender Studies, Postcolonial Literature, Digital Humanities, Northeast Indian Literature and Culture, and Ethnographic Studies. Our academic programs are designed not only to cultivate analytical and communication skills but also to foster an understanding of the ethical, cultural, and social dimensions of a rapidly changing world.
