About Us

Situated in the rolling landscapes of Assam, the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at NIT Silchar offers a rich intellectual environment for exploring the many dimensions of human experience. Since its inception in 1967, the department has been devoted to academic inquiry, committed to understanding the intricacies of human thought, culture, economy, and society. Immersed in the cultural richness of Northeast India, the department integrates the domains of humanities and social sciences to create intense, contemplative inquiry into the world.

The aim of the department is fourfold. First, it aspires to cultivate critical thinking and effective communication skills through holistic education; second, it encourages research that addresses contemporary social, cultural, economic, and environmental challenges; third, it promotes values of inclusivity, sustainability, and lifelong learning; fourth, it trains scholars to contribute meaningfully towards shaping society, industry, and academia with a deep understanding of human values, societal dynamics, and global interconnections.
